The Oldest Books and Magazines in the world, covering the horseless carriage (automobile)

Available on CD-ROM or downloadable

Many fascinating automotive facts contained in books and manuscripts, published at the at the dawn of the automotive age are virtually unknown today. Further, very few copies of the earliest publications are still in existence. In an effort to provide this invaluable information to as many people as possible, we are in the process of going through our archives and making such books and manuscripts available in electronic form. Many people are shocked to learn the extent of automotive experimentation that had been going on in late 1800's and early 1900's. Everything from four wheel drives, to gasoline-electric hybrids, to power steering were experimented with. You should find this and other similar books and manuscripts very informative. All of the books are truly fascinating and for sure you will learn about technology that you would not have guessed that people knew about 100 years ago. Many concepts probably should be revisited and redesigned using modern materials. In many ways, the designers and inventors of 100 years ago, were more innovative then todays designers.

In many, if not most cases, our original copy of the book or magazine is in poor condition. In some cases, the pages or bindings had deteriorated to the point where the pages are cracked, ripped or can not be fully opened. For this reason, in most cases, we did not use a flat bed scanner to copy the pages, but rather, high resolution digital cameras were employed. The copies are readable, though, in some cases, you will experience a keystoning effect or noticed torn or deteriorated pages. In very rare cases, words towards the center of the binding may be difficult to read. There are times when small text may be somewhat difficult to read. Below are several examples of defects that you may, though not necessarily experience, when reading these fascinating copies.

This is a fascinating book covering all known forms of motive power for automobiles, at the turn of the century. By 1900, most engineers and designers were focusing in on "Hydor-carbon" or gasoline powered vehicles, even though the powerful electric power companies and coal companies preferred the use of electric powered vehicles! Compressed air was also given serious consideration, though it could not provide the torque required for most normal driving conditions and was expensive to recharge the compressed air tanks.
